So far the idea that an engine could consume less fuel but enjoy greater performance and have significantly less impact on the environment seemed unthinkable.
But with Abt Sportsline’s new iS-technology for 2.0 T-FSI engines of the Volkswagen group this vision has become reality. With the iS-series, the Bavarian tuning specialists, who are also victorious in the DTM, have managed to combine three extremes: higher performance, less consumption and a reduced CO2-emission. It is fascinating that the driver himself is able to determine the performance data of his vehicle by selecting the fuel type (normal, super or super plus) at the petrol station. In this connection the dates vary from 200 to 240 HP and show an increase of up to 30 per cent compared with standard models.
Abt iS-technology
In times of high fuel prices and increasing environmental consciousness, the topic “improved fuel economy” becomes more and more important. Those who drive eco-friendly and sparing to natural resources but do not want to do without sportiness, driving dynamics and speed can achieve this with Abt Sportsline’s iS-series. iS stands for “intelligent Sport“. But what exactly is behind this intelligent technology? The iS-technology was developed by the Kempten-based company on the basis of the new 2.0 T-FSI engine, which was designed by Audi engineers and is fitted in vehicles from the Volkswagen group (Audi, Volkswagen, Seat and Skoda). In this connection Abt Sportsline uses the potentials of modern control electronics by optimizing the dates and modifying the standard gear unit so as to achieve optimal consumption data. These measures result in a considerably reduced number of revolutions, higher speeds and significantly decreased fuel consumption by up to 4 litres per hundred kilometres. These dates are also achieved by means of a power upgrade of up to 55 HP and result in clearly improved acceleration values, too.
Besides the effect of reducing fuel consumption, Abt Sportsline’s iS-technology also notably decreases CO2-emission. Abt is consequently pursuing the automobile manufacturers’ promise to reduce CO2-emission of their engines by 2010 at the latest. With the iS-technology reduced CO2-values of up to 22 g/km are achieved compared with standard models and in comparison to models of other manufacturers with assimilable performance, a reduction of as much as 50 g/km can be gained.
The driver himself makes the decision
With the new iS-technology, every driver decides for himself how much “sportiness“ he wants at the moment. By deciding in favour of a certain fuel quality (normal fuel, super or super plus) he controls the performance data of the engine and the torque. The intelligent Abt control chip identifies the fuel type and automatically adjusts the corresponding characteristic parameter set. The new technology enables car owners with iS-modified T-FSI engines to fill up with the low-priced normal fuel instead of the otherwise essential expensive super plus fuel. The performance dates vary from 200 HP and 280 Nm which are the standard power dates and are maintained when re-filling the car with normal fuel, to 220 HP and 320 Nm when using super, to as much as 240 HP and 330 Nm when re-filling with super plus.
Advantages of the iS-technology
The German technical supervisory authority DEKRA subjected the new iS-technology in the Abt GTI iS to an examination and compared it with the consumption values of the Golf GTI. In comparison to the standard model the results of the GTI iS are stunning. In a sporting ride on the motor way fuel consumption is reduced by four litres linked with a simultaneous performance increase. In the European test cycle the GTI iS still consumed one litre less in the city than the Golf GTI and up to three litres less than comparable models of other manufacturers. The example of the Seat Leon with iS-technology also demonstrates the positive development of performance and CO2-emission. The Abt Leon iS has 55 HP more than its standard counterpart and the torque is improved by 60 Newton metre. It accelerates 1.3 seconds faster from 0 to 100 km/h than the unmodified version and the top speed increases by 22 km/h at the same time. With the Abt Leon iS drivers are able to reduce fuel charges by 13% compared with the Seat Leon, and CO2-emission is reduced by 22g/km.
With the new iS-technology Abt Sportsline gives proof that tuning does not only mean “faster, lower, wider“ but is intelligent and environment-friendly by all means. Abt Sportsline has already demonstrated its competence in this field in the past with its participation in the 24-hour race at the Nürburgring with the Abt Audi A4 quattro which was driven by natural gas. The upgrade for the new 2.0 T-FSI engines of the Volkswagen group is available at every Abt tuning partner for 3,422.00 Euros including assembly, TÜV and manufacturer’s warranty up to 100,000 km. The new iS-series was presented at the Essen Motor Show for the first time and will be available for the following models with 2.0 T-FSI engines: Audi A3, Audi A3 Sportback, VW Golf GTI, Seat Leon, VW Jetta, Skoda Octavia RS, VW Passat, VW EOS.
